<><B>Identification: </B>lants parasitic on the living or dead roots of other plants, lacking chlorophyll. Stem fleshy, gray to white, waxy. Flowers white (rarely pink). Flowers solitary at the end of the stems. Leaves reduced to scattered scales along the stem. Plant 4 to 10 inches in height.</P>
<><B>Distribution: </B>Throughout most of North America except for the U.S. southwest and the central Rocky Mountains.</P>
<><B>Habitat: </B>Indian Pipe is found on the forest floor in the leaf litter and mold. The species seems to be particularly common near Beech trees.</P>
<><B>Flowering period: </B>June to September.</P>
<><B>Similar Species/B> The stems and flowers of <a href=\"http://www.nearctica.com/flowers/iton/monotrop/Mhypo.htm\" target=\"_blank\" >inesap</A> are red, not white. The flowers occur in clusters and are not solitary at the end of the stem. <a href=\"http://www.nearctica.com/flowers/iton/monotrop/Modor.htm\" target=\"_blank\" >Sweet Pinesap</A> is a smaller plant (2-4 inches in height), the flowers occur in clusters, and the leaf scales are relatively larger and more numerous.</P></LI>
